Palu, C Sulawesi, (antarasulteng.com) - Two moderate earthquakes, with different intensities, hit the districts of Morowali in Central Sulawesi Province and Gayo Lues in Aceh Province on Monday.
The official website of the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Office reported that an earthquake measuring 4.0 on the Richter scale jolted the Morowali District at 3:23 a.m. local time on Monday.
The epicenter of the earthquake was about 31 kilometers (km) southeast of Morowali at 2.85 degrees Southern Latitude and 122.14 degrees Eastern Longitude at a depth of 10 km.
Moreover, at 4:54 a.m. local time on Monday, another earthquake measuring 5.0 on the Richter scale hit the Gayo Lues District.
The epicenter of the earthquake in Gayo Lues was located at 4.15 degrees Northern Latitude and 97.20 degrees Eastern Longitude at a depth of 10 km, or some 27 km northwest of the district.
Luckily, the two moderate-intensity earthquakes in Morowali and Gayo Lues did not have the potential to trigger a tsunami.
The Indonesian archipelago, lying in an area of intense seismic activity where several tectonic plates collide, suffers from frequent earthquakes. (skd)
